Slew-Restricted Spider Crane Lift for Sign Installation Near Live Railway
Johnston Rigging (Fife) Ltd recently completed a contract lift project for Hillhouse Quarry Group. The task involved installing signage onto an existing building. The work was carried out at a height of approximately 11.5 metres and in close proximity to a live railway line. As a result, safety and precision were critical throughout the operation.
Jekko SPX532 Spider Crane for Rail-Side Lifting
However, access platforms such as cherry pickers or alternative spider cranes do not always provide the level of control required in high-risk environments.
For this project, we sourced a Jekko SPX532 spider crane due to its integrated slew restrictor system (spec). This feature allowed us to physically limit the crane’s rotational movement. As a result, the boom could not encroach towards the live railway line at any point during the lift.
In environments where there is no margin for error, this level of control is essential.
Safe Working at Height Near Live Railway Infrastructure
To carry out the installation safely, we used a man basket to allow operatives to access the working area. This ensured controlled positioning while maintaining stability and compliance with lifting best practices.
In addition, an Appointed Person oversaw the lift plan. They ensured all aspects of the operation were carried out in line with current regulations and safety standards.

Safe and Controlled Lifting in High-Risk Environments
This project highlights our commitment to:
- Safety-first operations, particularly in high-risk or restricted environments
- Selecting the right equipment, including cranes with advanced safety features such as slew restriction
- Providing experienced personnel on every lift
- Delivering reliable service to support contractors
